How To Keep 19 Month Old Son Busy

by Ruchi Gupta
(Bangalore, Karnataka, India)

Hi, this is Ruchi. Your website has been very helpful in guiding me. I hope I am able to get the desired help here.

My son is 19 months old. I've been spending quality time with him and so far there were no issues. However, now I am expecting again and unable to spend that much of time with him. First three months are critical for me. Please suggest how can I help stop building frustration in my son.

The First half of the day he spends most of the time with his Dad. Second half, I take care of him. As a result he end up missing his dad and starts crying. I do get tired easily which means less playing with him and more rest.

Please provide your valuable suggestions.

Toddler Parenting NEW
by: Ingrid from Toddlers Are Fun

Hi Richi!

Thanks for your question. Congratulations with the new baby on the way. As with your son, I have some advice. It is fine if your toddler adjusts and learns to play by himself. Children actually need to experience boredom at times, yes even as a toddler. It is not good for a child to be "entertained" by their parents all of the time. A child needs to learn how to use their imagination and be creative. You are in a great place because your son can start learning this now.

I would suggest that you begin allowing your son to play with only a few toys at a time. He will begin to learn how to be creative with the toys he has. This will be an adjustment for him. You can switch out toys from time to time. But keep with only a few at a time. You can plan "special" activities with your son once a day. Such as making crafts, painting, coloring etc. He will have something to look forward to together.

It is natural for a child to cry and miss their parents. It is a good thing for them to learn to play by themselves. When your baby arrives, your going to be busy, busy, busy. You have a great opportunity to begin now training your child to be creative and use their imagination.

Thank You for being such a Great Mom! I speak Blessings over your entire family!
